Developed by subject matter experts and AORN, this newly updated course provides evidence-based guidelines and concepts that support perioperative and procedural registered nurses caring for patients undergoing upper and lower gastrointestinal (GI) procedures.

Course Objectives

  • Identify common GI tract diseases and disorders.
  • Describe GI interventions for diseases and disorders of the GI tract.
  • Explain the essential equipment, supplies, and instruments used in GI procedures.
  • Describe GI-specific pre-procedural and post-procedural patient care considerations.
  • Explain evidence-based practice interventions for upper and lower GI procedure complications.

Course Outcome

90% of learners will know the responsibilities related to the care of patients undergoing GI procedures, as evidenced by a passing score of at least 80% on the posttest.

Contact Hours

After completion of the course and course evaluation, the learner will receive 2.0 contact hours.

This program is approved for up to 2 hours of AEUs by BASC Provider #0102.
