Maureen Spencer

M.Ed, BSN, RN, CIC, FAPIC

Maureen Spencer is a registered nurse with a master’s degree in education and board certification in infection control. She is currently an Independent Infection Preventionist Consultant. Her previous position included IP Consultant for Commonwealth Medicine, UMass Medical School during the COVID pandemic. Before that she was the Director of Clinical Implementation and Education at Accelerate Diagnostics, Tucson, AZ, the Corporate Director of Infection Prevention for Universal Health Services, the Infection Control Director at New England Baptist Hospital, and the Director of the Infection Control Unit at Mass General Hospital, Boston, MA, as well as several other IP positions in Boston.  

In 1990 she was awarded the APIC Carole DeMille Lectureship Award for her excellence in the field of infection prevention. Additional awards included a recipient of the APIC Heroes of Infection Prevention in 2007 and in 2012 she was selected as one of the "Who's Who of Infection Prevention”. In 2017 she was recognized as a Fellow of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (FAPIC) for her advanced practice in infection prevention.  Maureen has published over 55 peer-reviewed publications and co-authored two chapters in Bennett and Brachman Hospital Infections, 7th Edition 2023. Maureen has presented many lectures and abstracts at AORN and APIC conferences and is a national and international speaker on an array of infection prevention and control topics.
