Outstanding Achievement in Perioperative Nursing Evidence-Based Practice

Mary Anne Toledano is the System Perioperative Services Educator and Periop 101 administrator for Ochsner Health in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. She has over 13 years of experience in the operating room.

Toledano received her master’s degree in nursing from Chamberlain University and her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing in New Orleans.

Utilizing Evidence-Based Practice to implement change and provide safe patient care has always been a priority for Toledano.  In 2021, she guided the Ochsner team to upgrade from the Braden scale to the Scott Triggers risk assessment tool to evaluate the potential for patient pressure injuries.  Ochsner integrated the “Scott Triggers” tool system-wide into their EMR making it easier for the nursing staff to assess patients and implement interventions to prevent pressure injuries.  Toledano championed the creation, education, and launch of this successful change in perioperative practice.  This change based on evidence-based practice and research significantly improved patient care across 17 in-patient facilities and several outpatient surgery centers within the Ochsner System. Toledano’s ingenuity and creativity in utilizing evidence-based practice demonstrates her strong commitment to safe practices for both her patients and staff.
