However, AORN President Nakeisha Tolliver says demand for these specialized nurses now outpaces the current supply.


How do we cultivate the next generation of perioperative nurses and secure a robust pipeline for the future? Tolliver recently shared four key strategies:

    Many nursing students might not fully grasp the intricacies and excitement of the perioperative environment. Integrating targeted exposure to this specialty during their early education can be transformative. “Partnering with nursing schools is a great first step,” Tolliver said. “Guest lectures from experienced OR nurses can paint a vivid picture of the dynamic atmosphere, the intricate teamwork involved, and the advanced skills these nurses possess.”

    Clinical rotations specifically focused on the perioperative setting would offer invaluable hands-on experience. Students could observe surgical procedures, witness the meticulous preparation process, and interact with nurses who navigate this complex environment daily. Technology can also play a role. Virtual reality simulations can immerse students in a realistic OR setting, sparking their interest and allowing them to explore the intricacies of the space before stepping foot in a real one.
  1. Fostering Mentorship and Building a Network of Support
    Guidance and support are crucial for any aspiring professional. A well-structured mentorship program can connect student nurses with experienced perioperative nurses. Mentors can answer questions, provide career advice, and share their own experiences. This personal connection allows students to see the long-term career path and the fulfillment it can bring.

    “It’s important to continuously educate new graduate nurses and new to periop nurses with Periop 101,” said Tolliver. “It covers core areas like aseptic technique, patient safety, communication, sterilization and disinfection, and surgical case management. And it’s offered online, in a hybrid format, or for a facility to purchase.”

    The financial burden of education can be a significant deterrent for students considering specialized nursing careers. Offering scholarships or loan forgiveness programs specifically for those interested in perioperative nursing can make a substantial difference. Competitive compensation not only retains current talent but also sends a strong message to potential candidates.
