Building the Future OR: Four Keys to Strengthening the Perioperative Nursing Pipeline

The operating room (OR) represents a vital hub within the healthcare system. Here, a highly skilled team works in sync to deliver life-saving procedures. Perioperative nurses play a critical role in this symphony, ensuring patient safety and optimal outcomes throughout the surgical journey.

However, AORN President Nakeisha Tolliver says demand for these specialized nurses now outpaces the current supply.

How do we cultivate the next generation of perioperative nurses and secure a robust pipeline for the future? Tolliver recently shared four key strategies:

  1. Exposing the Magic of the OR: Igniting a Passion Early On
Many nursing students might not fully grasp the intricacies and excitement of the perioperative environment. Integrating targeted exposure to this specialty during their early education can be transformative. “Partnering with nursing schools is a great first step,” Tolliver said. “Guest lectures from experienced OR nurses can paint a vivid picture of the dynamic atmosphere, the intricate teamwork involved, and the advanced skills these nurses possess.”

Clinical rotations specifically focused on the perioperative setting would offer invaluable hands-on experience. Students could observe surgical procedures, witness the meticulous preparation process, and interact with nurses who navigate this complex environment daily. Technology can also play a role. Virtual reality simulations can immerse students in a realistic OR setting, sparking their interest and allowing them to explore the intricacies of the space before stepping foot in a real one.
  1. Fostering Mentorship and Building a Network of Support
Guidance and support are crucial for any aspiring professional. A well-structured mentorship program can connect student nurses with experienced perioperative nurses. Mentors can answer questions, provide career advice, and share their own experiences. This personal connection allows students to see the long-term career path and the fulfillment it can bring.

Networking opportunities further strengthen this support system. Organizing events like career fairs or information sessions specifically focused on perioperative nursing allows students to interact with a wider range of professionals. These events can be held at local AORN meetings, professional conferences or facilitated online through dedicated platforms. Building these connections fosters a sense of community and allows students to envision themselves within the specialty.

“It’s important to continuously educate new graduate nurses and new to periop nurses with Periop 101,” said Tolliver. “It covers core areas like aseptic technique, patient safety, communication, sterilization and disinfection, and surgical case management. And it’s offered online, in a hybrid format, or for a facility to purchase.”
  1. Making the Dream a Reality: Addressing Financial Barriers
The financial burden of education can be a significant deterrent for students considering specialized nursing careers. Offering scholarships or loan forgiveness programs specifically for those interested in perioperative nursing can make a substantial difference. These programs demonstrate a commitment to attracting talented individuals and investing in their future success.

Additionally, advocating for competitive salaries and attractive benefits packages for perioperative nurses is crucial. Competitive compensation not only retains current talent but also sends a strong message to potential candidates. It shows that the value and expertise of perioperative nurses are recognized and rewarded.
  1. Unveiling the Path to Growth: A Career Rich with Opportunities
The world of perioperative nursing offers a wealth of possibilities beyond the sterile confines of the OR. Highlighting the diverse career paths within the specialty can broaden its appeal. Students might be interested in specializing in specific surgical areas, like pediatrics or cardiovascular surgery. Others might find their calling in education, mentoring future generations of perioperative nurses. Leadership roles within surgical services or hospital administration offer avenues for growth and influence.

Furthermore, emphasizing the continuous learning opportunities within perioperative nursing is essential. This specialty thrives on innovation and advancements in surgical techniques. Nurses have access to ongoing professional development programs and advanced certifications, allowing them to refine their skills and stay at the forefront of the field. Highlighting these pathways demonstrates the potential for lifelong learning and a dynamic career within perioperative nursing.

“By implementing these four key strategies, we can spark interest in perioperative nursing early on, nurture the talent pipeline, and ensure a future filled with skilled and passionate perioperative nurses ready to deliver exceptional care in the OR,” she said.

“The future of perioperative excellence depends on it.”
