Developed by subject matter experts and AORN, this newly updated course provides standardized, evidence-based education of the workflow a perioperative professional should know prior to caring for patients undergoing orthopedic trauma surgery.

Course Overview

  • Review of anatomy
  • Types of traumatic fractures
  • The bone healing process
  • The role of the perioperative RN throughout the phases of perioperative care

Course Objectives

  • Discuss perioperative care for the patient undergoing orthopedic trauma surgery
  • Describe nursing considerations and possible complications of traumatic orthopedic injuries 
  • Differentiate between external fixation, open reduction/internal fixation, and intramedullary nailing

Course Outcome

After successfully completing the Periop 202 Orthopedic Trauma course, perioperative nurses will demonstrate knowledge of current, evidence-based perioperative best practices related to care of patients undergoing orthopedic trauma surgeries, as evidenced by passing the required posttest with a score of 80% or higher.

Contact Hours

Upon completion of the course and course evaluation, students will earn 1.6 contact hours.
