Periop 101 Learning Plan for the Hospital Operating Room Nurse
Periop 101: A Core Curriculum™ OR is one of three Learning Plans available through the Periop 101 nurse training program and is designed to prepare novice nurses for the operating room. The course combines online and in-person education that has been developed using the latest AORN Guidelines for Perioperative Practice and includes graduate-level Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies.

Perioperative Course Details
Each year, more than 12,000 novice nurses and experienced nurses new to the perioperative environment are enrolled in Periop 101 globally to prepare them for the OR.
The didactic course features 23 online modules, and learners have 2-year access to the course materials, serving as a clinical reference in their early career. The Periop 101 program also includes additional education for further development of new nurses beyond onboarding, mentorship for new nurses, and continuing education for experienced nurses. Periop 101 OR: Course Outcomes
On completion of this course, RNs will be able to demonstrate knowledge related to providing safe patient care in the perioperative environment.
Periop 101 OR: Course Objectives
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
- Summarize the roles and responsibilities of surgical team members in the perioperative environment.
- Identify the principles of sterile technique in the perioperative environment, including the processes involved in creating and maintaining a sterile field.
- Discuss the processes of cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of instrumentation and equipment.
- Explain safe medication administration practices based on interventions and pharmacologic indications for drugs commonly used in the perioperative environment.
- Describe how to prioritize perioperative nursing activities relevant to the perioperative environment.
- Identify opportunities and responsibilities for professional growth as a perioperative nurse.

Periop 101 OR: Continuing Education Units
To earn 39.8 contact hours, learners must complete each module posttest with a minimum score of 80%, complete the Course Evaluation, pass the final exam with a minimum score of 80%, and complete the Final Exam Evaluation.
This program is approved for up to 39.8 hours of AEUs and up to 10.8 hours of IPCHs by BASC Provider #0102.
