Periop 101 Learning Plan for Ambulatory Surgery Nurses

Periop 101: A Core Curriculum™ ASC is one of three learning plans in the Periop 101 surgical nurse training program. The course is intended to prepare new nurses for the surgery center. Periop 101 ASC is developed to reflect the latest AORN Guidelines for Perioperative Practice and includes graduate-level Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies that are vital to nurses learning how to safely care for patients.

Ambulatory Surgery Nurse Onboarding Course Details

This online didactic course features 24 learning modules and is designed for nurses entering the ambulatory surgery setting. It provides pre-op and post-op care training for new ASC nurses to ensure optimal outcomes for patients. Periop 101 ASC features a hybrid format, building a solid evidence-based practice foundation through classroom and online learning, plus clinical experience to reinforce what they've learned.

With 2-year access to the course materials, learners can use Periop 101 as a clinical reference as they develop their skills early in their career. The Periop 101 program also includes education for the professional development of new nurses beyond onboarding, mentorship for new nurses, and continuing education for seasoned nurses. Periop 101 ASC: Course Outcomes

Preoperative nursing care in the ASC is an important aspect of the patient's ambulatory care experience. A thorough preoperative assessment contributes to positive patient outcomes and safety. The additional preoperative assessment criteria that are used to determine whether a patient’s admittance into the center is appropriate for the ASC is supported with written policies and procedures that follow state licensure laws. The course also addresses ASC postoperative patient care that is comprised of three levels of care which lead to the patient’s return to self-care and wellness.

Periop 101 ASC: Course Objectives

At the completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • Summarize the roles and responsibilities of surgical team members in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative areas.
  • Identify the principles of sterile technique in the perioperative environment, including the processes involved in creating and maintaining a sterile field.
  • Discuss the processes of cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of instrumentation and equipment.
  • Explain safe medication administration practices based on interventions and pharmacologic indications for drugs commonly used in the perioperative environment.
  • Describe how to prioritize perioperative nursing activities relevant to the perioperative environment.
  • Identify opportunities and responsibilities for professional growth as a perioperative nurse.

Periop 101 ASC: Continuing Education Units

To earn 40.3 contact hours, learners must complete each module posttest with a minimum score of 80%, complete the Course Evaluation, and pass the final exam with a minimum score of 80%.

This program is approved for up to 40.3 hours of AEUs and up to 10.8 hours of IPCHs by BASC Provider #0102.
