Course Overview
Periop 101: A Core Curriculum is used by more than 2,500 organizations nationwide to recruit, educate, and retain perioperative nurses. Periop 101 is designed for both novice and experienced nurses new to the operating room. With more than 40,000 graduates and counting, the purpose of this course is to provide registered nurses (RNs) with the basic knowledge and clinical skills necessary to practice independently. Periop 101 uses a blended learning model incorporating online didactic content, skills-based labs, and a clinical preceptorship.
Course Outcomes
On completion of this course, RNs will be able to demonstrate knowledge related to providing safe patient care in the perioperative environment.
Course Objectives
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
- Summarize the roles and responsibilities of surgical team members in the perioperative environment.
- Identify the principles of sterile technique in the perioperative environment, including the processes involved in creating and maintaining a sterile field.
- Discuss the processes of cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of instrumentation and equipment.
- Explain safe medication administration practices based on interventions and pharmacologic indications for drugs commonly used in the perioperative environment.
- Describe how to prioritize perioperative nursing activities relevant to the perioperative environment.
- Identify opportunities and responsibilities for professional growth as a perioperative nurse.

Course Requirements
To earn the contact hours, learners must complete each module posttest with a minimum score of 80%, complete the Course Evaluation, and pass the final exam with a minimum score of 80%.
Periop 101: A Core Curriculum™ ASC Course Outcomes
Course Overview
Periop 101 ASC is an Ambulatory Surgery Center-specific curriculum that utilizes a blended learning model incorporating online didactic content, skills-based labs, and a clinical preceptorship focused on challenges specific to the ASC environment.
Course Outcomes
Preoperative nursing care in the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) is an important aspect of the patient's ambulatory care experience. A thorough preoperative assessment contributes to positive patient outcomes and safety. The additional preoperative assessment criteria that is used to determine whether a patient’s admittance into the center is appropriate for the ASC is supported with written policies and procedures that are in compliance with state licensure laws. The course also addresses ASC postoperative patient care that is comprised of three levels of care which lead to the patient’s return to self-care and wellness. On completion of this course, learners will be able to demonstrate knowledge related to providing safe patient care in an ASC environment.

Periop 101: A Core Curriculum™ Cesarean Section Course Outcomes
Course Overview
Periop 101: A Core Curriculum Cesarean Section utilizes a blended learning model that incorporates online didactic content, interactive skills labs, and a clinical preceptorship focused on care of the surgical patient undergoing a cesarean delivery. The content of this curriculum has been tailored to meet the educational needs of the RN who is new to the perioperative environment and/or new to the team performing cesarean sections.
Course Outcomes
On completion of this course, learners will be able to demonstrate knowledge related to caring for a pregnant patient in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative environments.
Course Objectives
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
- Identify the principles of aseptic and sterile technique in the perioperative environment, including the processes involved in creating and maintaining a sterile field.
- Discuss the processes of cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of instrumentation and equipment.
- Compare the roles and responsibilities of surgical team members in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative areas.
- Explain considerations for maintaining a family-centered environment when a support person is present in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative areas.
- Identify pregnant patient and fetal indications for cesarean delivery.
- Describe pregnant patient and fetal obstetric emergencies and how to manage them.
- Describe care considerations for pregnant patients undergoing cesarean delivery in the perioperative environment.
- Summarize the prioritization of nursing activities and interventions in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative areas.
