Developed by subject matter experts and AORN, this newly updated course provides standardized, evidence-based education of the workflow a perioperative professional should know prior to being assigned to a total knee arthroplasty procedure.

Course Objectives

This interactive course identifies the:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the knee.
  • Most common indications for adult total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
  • Most common surgical approaches for TKA and how they relate to patient positioning and the type of surgery.
  • Best practices for care of patients undergoing knee reconstruction during the three phases of perioperative care. 

Course Outline

  • Anatomy and physiology of the knee, including associated bone structures, ligaments, muscles, vascularity, and range of motion.
  • Surgical approaches and associated considerations for total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
  • Preoperative care including Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols, regional blocks, VTE prevention, and preparing the OR.
  • Intraoperative care including ERAS protocols, patient positioning, medications (including tranexamic acid and periarticular injections), surgical workflow, cemented vs uncemented TKAs, complications, and closing and dressings.
  • Postoperative care including ERAS protocols, recovery goals, and special considerations for TKA recovery.

Course Outcome

  • After successfully completing the Periop 202 Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) course, 80% of learners will articulate knowledge of current, evidence-based perioperative best practices related to care of TKA patients by passing the required post module knowledge tests with a score of 80% or higher.

Contact Hours

After completion of the course and course evaluation, the learner will receive 1.25 contact hours.
