AORN Position Statement on Advanced Practice Registered Nurses in the Perioperative Environment

This position statement describes AORN's beliefs about the contributions of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) in the perioperative setting as supporting optimal patient outcomes. The position statement provides a definition of and the education requirements for a perioperative APRN practicing in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of care. It discusses the role of the APRN in the first assistant role, and the qualifications, functions and clinical privileging process for perioperative APRNs.
