Outstanding Achievement in Perioperative Education: Clinical

Roderick D. McArdle, is the Clinical Coordinator for the Operating Room at Boston Children’s Hospital at Waltham. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Chamberlain University; and a Master of Science in Nursing from Framingham State University.

McArdle has been a perioperative nurse and AORN member for 17 years. He has held many roles including chapter president and vice president. He has received the award for Outstanding Achievement in Perioperative Leadership in Education given by Massachusetts Chapter I in 2019 and has won two poster awards; including the Clinical Improvement/Innovation Poster Award of Excellence in 2018 and Bronze Medal for the Design/Concept in 2021.

McArdle developed a robust and successful orientation program for newly licensed novice to experienced nurses new to the CVOR at Boston Children's Hospital. He incorporated Periop 101, and Virtual Reality in the Simulation Lab to further educate the new staff to the perioperative role.  McArdle, designed and implemented nine Virtual Reality training modules to train scrub skills such as cardiac cannulation in a non-threatening simulation lab before actually cannulating a live patient in the pediatric CVOR.  With the success of this program, Virtual Reality education is now being utilized in other services lines.
