Hand Sanitizer Helps to Ease Off Adhesive Tape
You can use alcohol-based hand sanitizing foam or gel to remove tape from patients' skin painlessly and without skin tears. For paper tape, apply the foam or gel right on top: It will soak through to allow easy removal. For other types of tape, pull up a small corner, then rub the sanitizer back and forth on the skin between the tape and the skin, where it's still sticking, to release the adhesive. This not only avoids the pain associated with pulling tape off of skin and hair, it also ensures that your patients' skin at the IV or dressing site is clean and germ-free! Kids and adults alike love this method of ouch-free tape removal, and always thank me for not ripping the tape off.
