The Future of Perioperative Nursing: How AI is Redefining Roles, Skills, and Patient Care

The integration of Augmented Intelligence (AI) in healthcare isn’t a distant reality—it’s here, transforming operating rooms worldwide. From optimizing case schedules to synthesizing electronic health record (EHR) data, AI is enhancing efficiency and supporting better patient outcomes in ways both profound and seamless.
In the operating room, AI is driving innovations that were once unimaginable. It is revolutionizing robotic-assisted surgeries, enhancing precision, and powering augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) simulations that elevate training for perioperative teams. AI even enables real-time pathology analysis during surgery, assesses supply chain demands, and simplifies preference card management, making OR workflows smarter and more streamlined.
AI as a Partner to the OR Team
AI isn’t just for surgical procedures; it’s also a resource for perioperative nurses and teams. Advanced AI chatbots are emerging as valuable support tools—offering guidance on best practices, assisting with policy creation, and answering clinical questions in real time, whether during the busy afternoon shift or in the urgency of a 2:00 AM emergency.
These advancements reinforce a central theme: AI is here to complement, not replace, the expertise of nurses. This was a key takeaway during my presentation at AIMed24, where healthcare professionals from across the globe convened to discuss AI’s current applications and future potential. The prevailing sentiment? AI and humans are stronger together. The principle of “Human + AI > Human or AI” and the necessity of keeping the “Human in the Loop” resonated deeply, shaping a vision of collaboration rather than replacement.
Dispelling Myths: AI Supports, It Doesn’t Replace
Concerns about AI replacing nurses often miss the mark. Nursing is rooted in critical thinking, empathy, and patient advocacy—qualities that no machine can replicate. Tools like the AORN Perioperative Nursing Data Set (PNDS) safeguard the role of perioperative nurses by providing a standardized framework for documenting their impact on patient care.
The PNDS doesn’t just validate nursing contributions; it empowers nurses to leverage AI to streamline documentation, improve workflows, and enhance their ability to deliver exceptional care. This synergy showcases the irreplaceable value nurses bring to the surgical team and underscores AI’s role as a support system rather than a substitute.
A New Frontier of Opportunities for Nurses
AI is also unlocking new opportunities for perioperative nurses, particularly in the realm of clinical data curation. As AI models evolve, they require well-structured, ethically sourced data that reflects the diversity of patient populations. Nurses play a critical role in ensuring these standards are met, offering a unique blend of clinical expertise and ethical oversight.
The OR is poised for one of the most significant transformations in decades, with AI acting as a catalyst for change. While the road ahead may feel daunting, it’s also rich with possibilities. By amplifying the expertise already present in the OR, AI promises to improve patient care, elevate caregivers' experiences, and open doors to new professional pathways.
Leading the Way Forward
As healthcare embraces AI, perioperative nurses are uniquely positioned to shape its future. By leveraging tools like the PNDS and embracing opportunities for leadership in AI-driven initiatives, nurses can ensure that this technology enhances—not diminishes—their vital role in patient care.
The future of perioperative nursing lies not in fearing AI but in leading its integration to preserve and enhance the essence of nursing. Together, we can harness AI to reimagine the OR and create a brighter, more efficient future for caregivers and patients alike.
