With the right mindset, strategies and support, you can overcome any challenges that come your way.

Surviving and thriving as a new ASC leader can often feel like venturing into uncharted territory, filled with daunting challenges and uncertainties at every turn. But true survival goes beyond merely adapting to these obstacles. It’s about flourishing in the face of adversity. As someone who has braved countless trials and tribulations in the realm of ASC leadership, I fully grasp the uphill battle that awaits those who are just starting out. In this article, I will share valuable insights and strategies drawn from my own experiences to empower you not just to survive but to excel in your role as an ASC leader.

Embracing the Human Element: Managing People

One of the greatest challenges you'll face as an ASC leader is managing a diverse team of individuals with unique personalities, strengths and weaknesses. One effective approach is utilizing DISC profiles, which allow you to gain insight into your team's behavioral styles and tailor your management strategies accordingly. However, remember that people are more than just profiles. To truly connect with your team, make a conscious effort to step out of your office and engage with them on the floor.

Administrative tasks can easily consume your time, so consider setting reminders to periodically break away and interact with your staff. Make it a priority to actively participate in team activities, both at the beginning and end of your day. Arriving early, joining morning routines and contributing to the preparations for the day ahead demonstrate your commitment.

When interacting with your team, practice empathy and active listening. Recognize that even small changes can have a profound and lasting impact on the overall dynamic within your team. Approach each situation with mindfulness, understanding the weight of your actions. Repairing trust, once damaged, is a painstaking process that can span over several months.

Nurturing Compliance: The Regulatory Tightrope

Compliance is the lifeblood of ASC administration. Start by meticulously reviewing the requirements provided by your accreditation agency and state. Make these resources easily accessible by saving them on your internet browser and refer to them frequently for regular review and updates. Review your facility's policies inside out, ensuring they not only align with regulations but are also being implemented correctly. Remember, it is not sufficient to merely have policies in place; you must be able to demonstrate their compliance. If the budget permits, consider the benefits of hiring a consultant to conduct a mock inspection of your facility. This external perspective can provide valuable insights and help identify any areas of non-compliance that may have been overlooked.

Networking is another avenue for navigating the regulatory tightrope. Join your state's ASC association and participate in a local AORN chapter. By actively engaging with colleagues, you can share knowledge, exchange insights and expand your professional network.

Mastering the Art of Organization

Maintaining a sense of organization amidst the whirlwind of ASC administration requires finding a system that suits your needs and preferences. For optimal organization on the go, I recommend utilizing an electronic project management platform. These web-based tools are specifically designed to help individuals and teams efficiently organize and track tasks and projects.

When a new task arises, simply add it to your project management board, regardless of its size, and prioritize it based on its importance. With the accessibility of these platforms on mobile devices, you can effortlessly stay organized even while on the move. In addition to using an electronic project management platform, it is also beneficial to create a task calendar that includes regulatory milestones such as fire and emergency drills, quality report due dates and other recurring tasks.

Continuous Education: Empowering Yourself for Success

In the realm of ASC administration, knowledge is the ultimate key to unlocking success and ensuring survival. If you're a new ASC leader, I highly recommend AORN's ASC Academy: Leadership Development course. This comprehensive course provided me with a strong foundation and a deep understanding of the responsibilities and skills required to excel in an ASC leadership role. The course covers a wide range of essential topics, including human resources, financial management, quality improvement, regulatory compliance and more.

In addition, AORN provides an invaluable resource through their ASC Guides, including the Guide to Leadership, Governance, and Quality and Risk Management. These guides go beyond education and offer a practical advantage by providing time-saving tools and templates that align with the requirements of common accrediting agencies. Gone are the days of spending countless hours and experiencing frustration while trying to develop your own tools and templates. Thanks to AORN's resources, you now have access to a diverse range of customizable tools and templates that greatly enhance the efficiency of your work.
