Everyone in a leadership position has experienced starting that first job as a leader — and it can be daunting throughout those first days and weeks. Whether you have been promoted within a team or are starting at a new location with new people, first impressions can be lasting from all sides. First, set clear goals for the first 90 days and keep personal notes on progress and feelings. Next, make sure the lines of communication are open right from the start — ask for input from team members and encourage feedback regularly. Practice active listening skills; it’s not always easy to accomplish this with so much information coming at you in a new role, but make this a priority. When you look back months or even years later, you will be glad you did, as truths tend to resonate.
