The 6th Annual Hospital Leadership ASC Survey from Avanza Healthcare Strategies, previewed in various media channels in December 2024, highlights a number of trends that reflect the movements in the outpatient marketplace, both in stand-alone facilities and those associated with hospital systems. Not all are unexpected, nevertheless there are some significant changes.
Among them are the survey results that indicate 70% of hospitals will allow employed physicians to invest in ASCs, a significant uptick from previous years as the ambulatory landscape evolved. Also noteworthy is the fact that 57% of hospitals now own two or more ASC, up from 47% in 2023, indicating a 10% increase in one year.
In fact, the survey shows that 90% of hospitals plan to grow their ASC portfolios. This is a larger increase from 2023, up from 70% last year. This result foreshadows the continued influence of hospitals and hospital systems on outpatient surgery as these organizations look to recruit and retain surgeons, respond to consumer trends and carve out their market shares and contributions to patient care in the ambulatory surgery market.
