New Option in Pre-op Pain Control

Cumberland Pharmaceuticals’ Caldolor, an IV formulation of ibuprofen, is now FDA approved for preoperative use. When given before surgery, the non-narcotic pain reliever can help patients wake up in significantly less pain. In a recent study, orthopedic patients who received Caldolor 800 mg in pre-op and every six hours afterward with supplemental morphine as needed experienced significantly less pain intensity over 24 hours than patients who received a placebo. Caldolor can be given to adults and pediatric patients six months and older to manage mild to moderate pain, and has the potential to reduce the use of opioids to manage moderate to severe pain.

Handheld Surgical Precision

OrthAlign’s Lantern is a single-use, smart tool that provides the next generation of orthopedic navigation. The smartphone-sized device employs small electromechanical sensors to register the patient’s unique joint anatomy and provide accurate, individualized alignment of implant components during knee replacement surgeries. Lantern requires no pre-operative imaging or computer-assisted systems, is compatible with most implants and fits into routine surgical workflows. The device currently supports total knee and uni-knee arthroplasty. Moving forward, OrthAlign is developing applications for total hip replacement procedures.

Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

Last month, HCA Florida Healthcare’s Kendall Regional Medical Center, Advent Health Celebration and The Women’s Hospital at Jackson Memorial became the first U.S. hospitals to use Memic Innovative Surgery’s Hominis Surgical System, which replicates the motions and capabilities of a surgeon’s arms. The platform is designed for transvaginal gynecological procedures, including benign hysterectomies and ovarian cyst removals. Hominis is the first FDA approved surgical robot that features miniature humanoid-shaped arms with shoulder, elbow and wrist joints, which provide human-level dexterity and 360-degree articulation. The platform boasts a small footprint, ergonomic controls and a short setup time.
