DRUNK DOCTOR? The plastic surgeon was arrested outside of the hospital Monday afternoon.

A Kentucky plastic surgeon is facing public intoxication charges after he allegedly showed up drunk to perform surgery, say police.

Theodore Gerstle, MD, of Lexington (Ky.) Plastic Surgery, was arrested Monday a couple blocks away from Baptist Health Hospital in Lexington. He never entered the OR to perform the one case he had scheduled.

Theodore Gerstle was held at Fayette County Detention Center Monday afternoon.

After the chief medical officer reportedly confronted Dr. Gerstle about his apparent intoxication, the plastic surgeon fled the hospital on foot. Police found Dr. Gerstle dressed in scrubs and a white lab coat walking a short distance from the hospital and led him away in handcuffs. Dr. Gerstle was booked into the Fayette County Detention Center on a charge of alcohol intoxication in a public place and has since been released from custody, say police.

Baptist Health Lexington has suspended Dr. Gerstle's staff privileges while it investigates, according to reports.

Lexington Plastic Surgery declined to comment. On its website, Dr. Gerstle is listed as a New York Native who received his bachelors degree from The United States Military Academy at West Point (N.Y.). He graduated from the University of Louisville's School of Medicine and trained in the Harvard Combined Plastic Surgery Residency program, says the site.
