Video Shows Patient Pushing His Own Propofol:Updated

Young male patient in "Knock Yourself Out" video empties his syringe.

Pushing His Own PropofolWe don't know the name of the surgical facility that let one of its patients empty his own syringe of propofol before drifting off, but you can see for yourself on this YouTube video that we're not making this up.

"They said I could inject my own anesthesia and the goal was to inject the entire syringe. I got so close!" says the patient. You can hear the anesthesia provider encouraging him on: "That's 10 ccs, you've got 10 more to go."

You have to question the judgment of the surgical center that shot and posted the video. Then there's the anesthesia provider's gloves (he's not wearing any!) and mask (dangling around his neck).

"The administration of any type of anesthesia, including propofol, should only be done by an anesthesiologist or other trained anesthesia provider," says the American Society of Anesthesiologists. "Propofol is a very powerful drug used to induce general anesthesia or sedation. The drug's ability to depress respiratory and cardiac function makes it vital for patients' critical life functions to be constantly monitored."
