Small Aperture Solution for Cataract Surgery

AcuFocus recently announced the FDA’s approval of its IC-8 Apthera intraocular lens for the treatment of cataracts, making it the first non-toric extended depth-of-focus implant for use in patients with as much as 1.5 diopters of corneal astigmatism. The len’s small aperture filters out peripheral defocused light, allowing only focused light to reach the retina. This proprietary technology provides excellent distance vision and clear intermediate and near vision, factors that mitigate the effects of presbyopia and give patients a full range of sight.

A New Force in Robotic Assistance

MicroPort Navibot’s SkyWalker System has received 510(K) clearance from the FDA for use during orthopedic procedures. The company says the platform will initially be marketed to optimize knee arthroplasties. Skywalker’s lightweight mechanical arm works in concert with intelligent navigation algorithms based on the patient’s preoperative CT scans and anatomical data to improve the accuracy, precision and efficiency of bone and tissue resection. During surgery, the system guides surgeons to precise implant positioning to enhance reconstruction of the knee and soft tissue balance in the joint.
