Great ideas for your OR

Cool Protection From Radiation Exposure

Healthmark Industries now offers X-ray vests and aprons made with a nylon fabric and equipped with lead-free material as part of its line of Cool Aids personal cooling products. The weight of the garments is evenly distributed around the shoulders and hips for added comfort, and each piece features quick-release Velcro straps and buckles. The pockets on the front and back hold proprietary Cool Pax to keep wearers comfortable, especially during long cases. The X-ray vest is made of 0.5mm and 0.25mm lead equivalent material for front and back protection, respectively. The apron has 0.5mm lead equivalent frontal protection, adjustable shoulder straps and a six-inch elastic panel across the back for added support.

High-Tech Hardware for Knee Replacements

Zimmer Biomet’s Persona IQ is the first knee implant with smart technology to keep surgeons updated on the progress of their patients’ recoveries. The device houses smart sensors developed by Canary Medical that capture objective kinematic data — such as joint range of motion, step count, stride length, distance traveled and average walking speed — from patients as they go about their daily routines after surgery. Captured data is sent remotely to an intuitive cloud-based dashboard through which surgeons can actively monitor the post-op function of the knee and the activity levels of patients as they complete rehab programs.

Fish Graft Improves Wound Healing

Omega3 SurgiBind, a new implantable fish-skin graft from Kerecis, is FDA approved for use during soft tissue repair or as reinforcement of the body’s natural healing mechanism in plastic or reconstructive surgery, abdominal procedures and hip replacements. Processed from intact cold-water fish, the graft provides rapid cell ingrowth, neovascularization and wound closure to speed tissue remodeling. The gentle processing used on the fish skin retains the graft’s similarity to human tissue with inherent natural strength and complexity from Omega3 and other fatty acids, which help wounds heal faster.
