Great ideas for your OR

Improve Staff and Surgeon Comfort
A new line of anti-fatigue mats from Healthmark Industries are manufactured from black, 0.75-inch thick polyurethane foam, which is designed to reduce fatigue and discomfort from standing for hours on end. The stain- and puncture-resistant surface prevents water and soil from seeping into the mat, and its 18-degree beveled edge and textured top reduce tripping and slipping hazards. The mat is easy to clean between cases and available in three sizes: 20 inches x 32 inches, 24 inches x 36 inches and 20 inches x 48 inches.

A New Option in Post-op Pain Control
The FDA has approved Zynrelef from Heron Therapeutics to provide post-op pain relief after bunionectomy, open inguinal herniorrhaphy and total knee arthroplasty. Zynrelef, an extended-release, dual-acting local anesthetic, lets surgeons administer a fixed-dose of the numbing agent bupivacaine and the NSAID meloxicam at surgical sites. Heron Therapeutics says the combination provides analgesia for three days after surgery, a time during recovery when patients experience the most pain and are likely to require opioids for relief of their discomfort.

Putting a Squeeze on DVT
Blood flow problems can occur when patients are immobile after surgery. The Oscipulse device, which was developed by physicians at the University of Pennsylvania, optimizes active blood flow through simultaneous foot flexion and compression at specific intervals along the calf. The squeezing triggers a reflex similar to what occurs when patients walk to prevent clots from forming behind valves and deep vein thrombosis from occurring. Oscipulse features compression sleeves and an open, breathable design that the developers say is more comfortable for patients than conventional mechanical cuffs.
