Assess the patient preoperatively for contraindications to pneumatic tourniquet use and factors that may increase the patient’s risk of developing complications from pneumatic tourniquet use.
- NEW Exercise increased caution when using a pneumatic tourniquet for older adult patients and patients with low preoperative hemoglobin, increased risk for venous thromboembolism, and a high body mass index. 3.1.-.1.3.4.
- NEW Specific contraindications to pneumatic tourniquet use include peripheral vascular disease, previous arterial bypass graft, and thigh circumference larger than 100 cm. 4.1-1.4.2.
