Recommended Practices Implementation

The new AORN Journal series on implementing AORN recommended practices (RPs) is designed to bridge the gap between standards and execution. These will include:

  • The RP Summary, which can serve as a reference, a visual aid, a means to resolve disputes, and material to help prepare for the CNOR exam.
  • The RP Implementation Guide, which focuses on a single recommended practice document, describing significant changes, areas of risk or concern, elements of compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements, and strategies for successful implementation.

Implementing AORN Recommended Practices for Sterilization

Sterilization is essential to reducing or preventing the risk of surgical site infections. This is a collaborative process and should include all health care providers who handle these instruments, including perioperative nurses. The revised AORN “Recommended practices for sterilization,” includes updates on sterilizing single-use items, inspecting critical items before sterilization, using low-temperature hydrogen peroxide vapor sterilization methods, and immediate use steam sterilization. This RP document is the first AORN document to be evidence rated and accepted for inclusion in the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality National Guideline Clearinghouse.
