Perioperative Nurses Send Letters to Commemorate Time Out Day
Publish Date: 6/26/2013
Perioperative nurses around the country celebrated Time Out Day by educating others about its importance.
90 nurses sent letters to their federal and state elected representatives which described the seriousness of wrong patient, wrong site, and wrong procedure surgery, and explained the role of the Time Out tool in reducing these errors. Representatives and senators in California, Louisiana and Maryland responded to AORN members thanking them for the information and their continued vigilance on behalf of surgery patients.
In addition to writing elected officials, 82 nurses also wrote 272 letters to the editors of their local papers about Time Out Day. Check out these letters from Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Michigan,
North Carolina, Oregon, and Virginia.
Time Out is an important tool for ensuring patient safety. Educating your community about this tool not only enables them to become better-informed patients, but also demonstrates your role in patient care and your dedication to patient safety as the perioperative nurse who cares for them. Thank you to everyone who took the time to send these important letters.
