Alabama Considers RNFA Reimbursement Bill

Publish Date: 5/1/2013

The Alabama State Senate is considering a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) reimbursement bill this legislative session. Senate Bill 444 was introduced on April 16 and has been referred to the Senate Committee on Health.

SB 444 is intended to encourage the continued use of registered nurse first assistants by physicians and surgical facilities to provide quality, cost-effective surgical intervention to Alabama patients and would require managed health care agencies, workers’ compensation carriers, and all private insurance companies to provide for reimbursement of services provided by Alabama RNFAs.

This bill would apply to licensed registered professional nurses certified in perioperative nursing that have successfully completed a RNFA education program that meets AORN’s Standards for RN First Assistant Education Programs.

Alabama joins Massachusetts, Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania in considering RNFA reimbursement legislation this 2013 legislative session.
