IOM and Nursing: New Action Coalitions Announced

Publish Date: 4/25/2012

In March the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action announced 12 new Action Coalitions, bringing the total number of states with Action Coalitions to 48. These Action Coalitions are charged with implementing the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health which include: (1) Strengthening nurse education and training; (2) Enabling nurses to practice to the full extent of their education and training; (3) Advancing interprofessional collaboration among health care professionals to ensure coordinated and improved patient care; (4) Expanding leadership ranks to ensure nurses have a voice on management teams, in boardrooms and during policy debates; and (5) Improving health care workforce data collection to better assess and project workforce requirements.

The newest Action Coalitions are in Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee and Vermont. The only two states without Action Coalitions are Alaska and Oregon.

It is very important for perioperative nurses to get involved with their state’s Action Coalition to make sure your unique knowledge and contributions to patient safety are being heard. You can get involved by contacting your state’s Action Coalition leaders. If you would like to receive updates or start an Action Coalition in Oregon or Alaska you can sign up here.
