Recommended Practices Assessment

The orientation and onboarding of an experienced perioperative RN can be a challenging process for the orientation provider and personnel involved in hiring experienced perioperative RNs in various practice settings, specifically for new hires. An assessment of a perioperative RN’s abilities to provide nursing care using clinical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of recommended practices is a vital part of the orientation process in any perioperative setting.

The purpose of the Recommended Practices Assessment is to identify gaps in knowledge, clinical reasoning skills, and problem-solving skills related to current recommended practices in the perioperative setting. The feedback gained from this module assists the orientation providers (e.g. educators, managers, orientation coordinators, human resources personnel, and staffing agencies for travel nurses) in planning an individualized orientation for an experienced perioperative RN.

In addition to orientation providers, an individual experienced perioperative RNs will benefit from this learning activity by assessing their own perioperative knowledge, clinical reasoning, and problem-solving skills as a continuing nursing education activity. With the help of the results from the module the orientation providers will be to identify gaps in knowledge, clinical reasoning skills, and problem-solving skills related to current recommended practices in the perioperative setting.

Medication Safety Assessment (Adult)

The Joint Commission has stated errors associated with medications are believed to be the most common type of medical error and are a significant cause of preventable adverse events.

Help prevent medication errors by identifying misinformation and improving nursing knowledge with the use of this new tool.

AORN now offers an Adult Medication Safety Assessment that can be used as an on-boarding tool to establish a baseline level of knowledge on medications and also knowledge of Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices.

Knowledge of perioperative medications and safe practices is critical for positive patient outcomes. This online independent study assessment will help identify knowledge gaps related to perioperative medications. Educators, managers, orientation coordinators, and staffing agencies for travel nurses will find this a helpful tool for on-boarding newly hired, experienced RNs. It can also be used by individual nurses as a self assessment to identify knowledge gaps.
