Nebraska Considering Registration for Surgical Technologists

Publish Date: September 14, 2015

Earlier this year under its Credentialing Review (407) Program, a process advisory to the legislature designed to assess the need for state regulation of health professionals, Nebraska considered licensing surgical assistants and surgical technologists. Many stakeholders including AORN provided feedback throughout this process. AORN member and state legislative coordinator, Karen Rustermier, BSN RN CNOR, has also been involved in these conversations.

In late August a draft report of recommendations was issued by the review committee, which recommended only mandatory registration with a competency assessment requirement for surgical technologists. The report also recommended licensing surgical first assistants who have obtained a level of education, training, and examination as approved by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

This process is still underway and AORN Government Affairs will continue to participate in discussions and monitor the status of the review.
