In a letter dated November 5, 2012, the Texas Team Advancing Health Through Nursing urged for reimbursement of registered nurse first assistants (RNFAs) by Medicare.
The Texas Team is a nonpartisan action coalition designated by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to take leadership in Texas in implementing the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.”
The letter discusses the importance of RNFAs and highlights their ineligibility to be reimbursed by Medicare for their services. The Texas Team suggests removing this barrier will allow for cost savings to Medicare as well as ensure a qualified first assistant is utilized at surgical procedures.
Texas’ Action Coalition is the second IOM state Action Coalition to create a letter on the topic of RNFA reimbursement by Medicare after New York.
